Belgium is a mix of French and Flemish influences. In fact, there has been talk of the country splitting in two. This has resulted in a culinary tradition of tremendous chocolate, beer and, of course, heavenly waffles.
I have had waffles. You have probably had waffles. Neither of our experiences even remotely compares to waffles in Belgium. They are not a breakfast meal here. They are so good, waffles are eaten as a dessert in Belgium.
Brussels is sweet in ways you cannot imagine. In addition to dessert waffles, the city is famous for brewing the best cherry beer in the world. It is excellent and must be tried. You can almost watch your waistline expand.
As the calories pile up, you are inevitably going to start thinking about exercising. Brussels is top notch in this area as well. You can rent a bike just about anywhere and go for a relaxing ride that will use up some of those waffles and beer.
For lodgings, the best choice in Brussels is not the bigger chain hotels. Nope, you want to stay at the smaller inns. They tend to be family owned and you can get a feel for the real Brussels with tips on what to see and where to eat.
When you wake, you will find that this sleepy night time town is in full swing. Grab your walking shoes, explore the town, and start that gastronomical feast all over again. After all, who can ever have enough of chocolate, waffles, and beer?
Brussels often does not get much respect when top tourist destinations are mentioned in Europe. It should. The food is tremendous and the sites have much to offer. If you have a chance to go, do so.
