Absconding in the attic, I rummaged through an unyielding box of Christmas decorations looking for the beautiful ornaments from years gone by, when, amidst the pile I land upon "the book." Immediately a smile crosses my lips. Fond memories of Christmas' past come flooding back. In my mind's eye, I see my mother gathering our family together to read a favored story.

This family tradition began when I was only 8-years old and continued well into my teens. My mother would call us into the family room.fireplace litlights aglow on the Christmas treepeace and quiet spreading throughout our house as we snuggled under the weight of the family quilt. It was then that my sister and I would anxiously anticipate the opening words; the beginning of a treasured tale from our most prized collection of beloved Christmas stories.

There was something reassuring about this particular ritual. We could hardly wait for my mother to bring out "the book" each December. Year after year, this tradition was carried out in our home and year after year the stories became more meaningful to me.

These classic tales are rich with moral values, connecting oneself to a deeper understanding of the human condition. Each story has a magical twist that inspires and fortifies the soul. As I have grown, so has my appreciation for the meanings found in these story. I am ever thankful that my mother had the insight to read these stories over and over, allowing my understanding of these stories to grow as I grew.

I am grateful to my mother for understanding that children never outgrow the love of hearing a story read aloud. As she infused the passages with passion and meaning, my sister and I strengthen our resolve to train our own voices to speak with conviction and clarity.

As another Holiday approaches, I joyfully unpack the "Most Loved Christmas Book". The tradition continues as I anxiously thumb through the pages, considering which of the stories will be read first this Season. As I breath deeply and fully, I am overwhelmed by the awareness that the true Spirit of Christmas as been re-awaken within me. It's going to be a wonderful Christmas this year. After all, it's "tradition".
