Secularism is often defined as the separation between church and state or in order words from religion and Government. This can also refer replacing state religious laws with civil laws in an ultimate goal to prevent any discrimination based on religious principles or beliefs.

Secularism plays a very crucial role in regards to politics. Secularism demands that politicians base their decisions an opinions with a secular mind set rather than a religious one especially in regards to controversial issues such as abortion, embryonic stem cell research, same-sex marriage and sex education.

A lot of religious organizations recognize that in a democracy that laws must be made in accordance to a secularist view however many major religious will attempt to influence public policy through church-state agreements.

The majority of Christians accept the fact that the laws and constitution of our nation have been molded in a secular fashion and some even find the idea from within the bible and the teachings of Jesus. Some Christian fundamentals believe that secularism is a threat to their rights to live in a society that is Governed by the religious teachings. The two most dominant entities in regards to religious fundamentalism are Fundamentalist Christianity and fundamentalist Island.
