Fish kept in an aquarium are definitely the easiest pets you can keep. Take adequate measures to care for your fish after you have established the fish tank. There are things that should be done daily to care for fish and some things that need only be done weekly or bi-weekly. Note that there are not many things that you will have to do everyday for care of your fish tank. You will need to look at the fish every day to make sure they appear to be overall healthy and happy. Fish, suffer from stress as well and you would want to make sure the living environment does not cause any form of unnecessary stress that can threaten their health and well being.

Check the lights and the filters of the aquarium daily to see if they are working correctly and they are properly plugged. You need to feed them daily. When feeding them, just supply enough food to last during a two or three minutes feeding time. Foods that are left after consumption will become trash in the fish tank, which will increase the nitrite levels and cause your fish to fall ill. Make a note of the pH value of the water and its temperature on a weekly basis. Make any changes where necessary and do not procrastinate. Ask the pet store where you got your fish from and they will tell you the exact pH for your fish. You will need this information as it varies among different species of fish.

Filter cleaning is extremely important. The aquarium filters will collect all the wastes that the fish produce by way of excretion. Without cleaning the filter repeatedly, they will not be able to remove the wastes because they will get clogged very soon. Another job that the filters do apart from removing the waste is to circulating oxygen into the task. With clogged filters, circulation will become slower. Due to this, the available oxygen in the tank can go down. If you do not correct this, your fish may die. Change the filter on the aquarium every two to three weeks depending on need. If the water becomes opaque and emanates an undesirable odor, it's time to change the filter. You may either clean your filter with ordinary water or change it but it depends on what kind of filter you are using.

You must be very cautious when you are changing water in the aquarium. Before cleaning your aquarium, make sure to unplug all lights and other fixtures. Each seven or fifteen days, remove a third of the water from your aquarium and put in fresh water in its place. The water that you are adding into the aquarium must be two degrees within the temperature of the aquarium. Ask your pet store owner about the requirements of water for your fish. Short term treatment for the tap water could be for about half an hour, but you may sometimes need to treat the water for the whole night too.

When cleaning the tank, clean from the sides to scrub out any buildup of alga. While cleaning, do not agitate the fish. Move rocks and decorations to loosen any debris. When the water is being changed, try and remove all of these residual wastes using a small bucket or a siphon to do this. You will have to remove the leaves of the aquarium plants as they die. Use a squeegee soaked in clean water to clean the outer surface of the aquarium. Do not miss out on cleaning the lid and the cover of the tank. Your cleaning is done.
