Give some serious thought to learning a new language before you plan your next overseas trip. To get an idea of what is involved why not visit your local library or search the Internet for free introductory language courses, these options can be inexpensive or even free and are a great way to get started.
A relatively new and increasingly popular learning technique is learning with your ipod. Your language of choice is simply downloaded onto your ipod so you can learn any place any time.
Begin with greetings and phrases such as How are You? my name is, can you help me? and some common destination phrases, such as post office and pharmacy, cafe or restaurant, train station and taxi.
If you consider what you will be doing while you are on holiday and the things you may need to ask for, why not start with those? Learning a foreign language just takes a little practice, and the more you use your new skills the better you will become.
If you have a destination in mind why not consider a language holiday? A number of companies now offer a language and culture immersion, you live within the local community and positively cant help but be surrounded by the language and culture 24/7, the longer you spend the better your language becomes, be warned however it does get harder to go home after this type of holiday.
You will be glad you have at least a little of the local language to get by on. It really will make a difference to how the locals interact with you and you with them.
Why don't you start today? learning a new language is fascinating and good brain exercise. You never know who you may be able to help with your language skills, a tourist in your own country or a tourist struggling on vacation. Its a great feeling to be understood in a foreign country. Try it, you may be surprised where it could take you.
