Lots of families spend more time shopping for an automobile than selecting a college.

Of course, everyone knows what questions they want answered when they're at a car dealership. They may be far less certain what to ask a college admissions counselor.

Unfortunately, families are frequently intimidated by the prospect of interacting with college personnel, and are therefore afraid to ask questions even if they have them. For the most part, these people have an unfounded fear of asking "stupid questions" because they have not been through the college selection process before.

You are expected to ask questions. You should ask questions. And you should not fear embarrassing yourself; that almost never occurs (and so what if it does?). The real danger is making a poor college choice because you fail to ask the right questions. That's a decision that carries serious consequences. So, here are five questions to get you started. You'll surely think of more.

1. What kinds of students are most likely to be happy and successful here?

2. Would you please describe the relationships between students and faculty? Between students?

3. How engaged are students in academics? In campus activities?

4. Do students have any unique or special opportunities (internships, study abroad, community service, research, etc.)?

5. What percentage of your students leave campus on an average weekend?

These questions are just a start. You'll think of many, many more. Write them down as they occur to you. Be aware that every question you conceive is valuable, because the answer to each may help you make a great college choice or prevent you from making a bad one.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to make a great college choice. It's simply a two step process; coming up with the right questions and asking them.
