The next development in the commercialisation of the game came at the end of 1929 when a toy manufacturing company salesman, Edward Lowe, visited a carnival and witnessed the game being played but on a 5x5 grid card, meaning that players could get a line in any direction: vertically, horizontally or diagonally. The game was named “Beano” by the carnival pitchman. Lowe came up with the name “Bingo” after trying out the game on friends and when one woman completed a line, she became tongue-tied and instead of shouting ‘Beano’ she exclaimed ‘B-B-B-B-Bingo!’. Lowe never trademarked the game or its name and because it came out of the public domain, it had little chance of being protected by copyright. Lowe simply accepted imitators and asked only for them to pay him $1 a year and to use the name “Bingo” to promote their game.
Recent years has seen the rapid development of online bingo, with the game concept now appealing to people of and no longer being branded with the stereotype that it once was. People no longer have to allocate specific time for travelling to and from a bingo hall; they can just turn on their computer and connect to one of the many websites that offer online bingo games. Online bingo offers a lot of benefits to the player over land-based bingo, such as automated card-checkers to eliminate the risk of missing one of the calls, easier money-handling so that you won’t lose any loose change on the floor, and the joy of 24-hour bingo! You can play against people from all over the world at all hours of the day, which is one of the main reasons why people prefer online bingo to real bingo. However, some bingo players argue that online bingo will never replace the real thing because it cannot simulate the same atmosphere and thrill that playing in a real bingo hall generates.
