Good things can be bad if they are utilised with bad intentions. This is real in the real universe as well as in the virtual universe that the internet is.

Spywares started when website owners tried to understand the user of the site better. By responding well to the users unique browsing experience, the website owner can make the visit to the site a more positive experience, which is good for the user as well as the site owner.

However, when it is overused in that respect and, worse, it is misused to the extent that some private data is also sent out to the internet universe with intent to cause damage, then it becomes a true, evil, spyware. In this case, the creator of the spyware is not interested in enhancing the user's internet experience, but rather in stealing information.

With the boom of the internet or the virtual universe in the mid to late 90's, spywares also followed booming. Too many spywares and malwares are released to the internet by evil intentioned programmers that it is no longer safe to ignore them since info stolen can and actually be used to steal money to huge amounts.

Anti spywares boomed as a result. They are the good soldiers in the virtual battlefield, finding and destroying the spywares. Since anti spywares are created by coordinated and informed programmers in large corporations, they are usually successful in fighting spywares which are usually created by uncoordinated, isolated groups of programmers.

When spywares are created by equally coordinated and planned programmer groups, however, the major hazards become real. This is more so since the spyware can already cause damage from the time it is released, but anti spyware needs time to identify them and work againts them through good strategies.

The worse arrives when spywares which look like anti spywares were created. Created by the most skillfull but bad hearted programmers, these are the most difficult to fight againts especially for the non-technical population of the internet.

It is then very important to understand spywares and malwares. Even the best firewalls and antispywares will be broken by newer spywares. This is especially dangerous for the layman who might not understand the technicalities. You may never know what the real threat it and will be susceptible to be damaged badly without effective countermeasures.
