Designing and constructing a garden railroad can be a lot of fun. Whether you have experience of indoor railways or are a beginner, everything can be learned and your railroad can bring hours of pleasure. The natural outdoor layout can provide some or all of the landscaping and scenery for the railroad. Garden railroads originated in Europe. They began with G scale models there and are now popular all over the world. It is easier nowadays to find G scale trains and accessories because of this increase in their popularity.

It is important to remember that, unlike indoor railroads, you have to use accessories and equipment that are capable of standing up to the climate and weather. The trains might be running throughout the year so you need to bear in mind that everything you use has to be strong enough and resistant to weather extremes. The basic design and structure of the garden railroad would otherwise be very similar to an indoors version.

It is important to ensure that your railroad and all the equipment you are using is constructed in such a way that it is easy to maintain. It can be hard work to integrate the railroad successfully into your garden so if it breaks and needs to be repaired, it will be equally hard to get it all out again.

If you are a garden railroad fanatic, there are conventions and events which you might be interested in attending. The Garden Railway Convention is held annually in Denver. If you go to the events section of www.trains.com or have a look at www.gardentrains.org, you can find a calendar of these events and meet likeminded garden railroad enthusiasts.

Creating a garden railroad is an enjoyable hobby and can look great in your garden. You can make one for your own pleasure, to amuse your children or grandchildren or the general public. Garden railroads are becoming more common throughout the world but are still unusual enough to attract attention if your garden railroad can be seen from the street.
