There are a few things to bear in mind if you are considering an upgrade to Vista. The main consideration is compatibility between Vista and your computer. Compatibility between Vista and peripherals such as your scanner, webcam, printer and others is an issue too. It is not possible to guarantee complete compatibility with every product and offer lots of new features too so you should be prepared for possible problems. You need to check, either with Microsoft, or with the peripheral manufacturers, whether Vista is going to cause compatibility issues with your existing peripherals, being especially careful about the scanner because these can be problematic when upgrading. Microsoft has a program you can use to test for compatibility. Visit the website for more information.
If your computer is twelve months old or newer, it should be sufficiently powerful to run Vista correctly. If not, upgrades might be required. If you are thinking of buying Vista Premium Edition, you should check your computer has 1GB of RAM (many computers have less, even ones that are not that old), a processor of at least 1GHz, a hard drive of 40GB or more, a sound card, DVD drive and internet connection.
Remember also that it is nearly always more tricky to upgrade your version of Windows than to begin with it preinstalled, so rather that buy a new computer now then upgrade to Windows Vista, it might be better to wait until Vista is launched then buy a computer with it already on. You might be lucky and not have trouble with the upgrade but waiting a while will probably make your life easier. If you do decide to upgrade your computer it is vital to make sure all your data and files are backed up just in case something does go wrong. Upgrading does not normally affect your files and documents but it is wise to back everything up just in case. If the upgrade causes serious problems, you might not be able to finish the installation or get your old operating system back either, so back them up as a precaution. If the worst happens and you have to reload the old operating system back on to the machine, your files would be deleted.
Windows Vista is potentially a great operating system, offering many new features, but it is vital to do the compatibility checks before choosing it, and very important to back everything up before installation.
